How to make your PC faster in easy 5 steps
Got a pc or laptop which is running very slow?
Try the following six steps before spending some serious money in upgradation!
1. Free up some Space in your Primary Drive
This step may seem pretty little, but this has lots to do with maintaining your system speed. Since ‘C’ drive acts as the primary drive – almost all the applications are installed in it. So whenever you use a program it needs some space to store its files. Guess what? This space is taken in your primay drive. If the application dont get enough space to perform it may become laggy results in system performance as well.
You can free up space in C drive by moving all your personal files from Desktop, Downloads, Pictures, Documents, Videos, Music etc.. into the secondary drive. Also uninstall unnecessary applications by going to control panel.
For smooth running a minimum of 10GB free space is required (This opinion is mine, some people may disagree)
Most people i came across using a laptop dont know about this option. So it may seem simple but has high impact. In almost every battery operated intelligent device there are options to save battery charge by switching it to power saving, ultra power saving and normal mode. Likewise Laptop too has this feature.
To switch your laptop into high performance mode goto -> power and sleep settings under battery icon in taskbar -> additional power settings -> Select High Performance mode. (Sometimes high performance mode will be hidden under Additional Plans.)
PS: Only use High Performance mode during extreme heavy work conditions and once the work is done switch back to balanced or power saving mode. This will help to maintain your battery life.
By default Windows performs lots of animations and other tweaks in the appearance of your OS to make the user experience more lively. We can either disable or adjust according to our preference.
To do this Right click on This PC -> Properties -> Advanced System Settings -> Click Settings under Performance. This will give us an option to select from 4 choices which has Default, For Best Appearance, For Best Performance and Custom. If you choose for Best Performance you will lose the pretty animations and appearance specialities which will free up some RAM results in little bit faster running OS!
When you install new applications some of these can automatically start every time you boot up your machine and works in the background all the time. You can disable those applications by going to startup programs section.
To do this Click “ctrl+shift+Esc” which will open task manager -> Select Startup tab, one by one disable all the unnecessary apps.
This will also help in reducing the booting time.
whenever you do some serious works or have been using your machine for some times now, chances of clogging up your temporary files are pretty high which will eat up your C drive space and eventually resulting in slower system speed. Delete these files often. Mainly these files are stored in 4 Folders. They are:
To delete the contents in these folders Press “win+r” which will open the Run -> type the folders name one by one and hit enter -> select all the contents in each folder -> Delete. (Repeat these steps for all the four folders. However some of the items can’t be deleted so just skip them because the system is currently using them.)
PS: Don’t delete contents in “prefetch” folder often because they contains supporting files which is used during booting.
This is the final step – only do this if none of the above methods work. There are some people like me who will not get satisfied even after doing all these steps. For them a fresh install is always better. From Windows 8 onwards Microsoft has provided an option for Resetting your PC.
To do this click on “win” button and search for reset this PC option -> then follow the onscreen instructions. (Refer video if any doubt arises – https://youtu.be/21Vnjcq-nO4)
These are by far the effective methods which can be used to speed up your system. What is your experience? Let me know in the comments. Thank you for reading and share it with your friends if this post helped you!
